FOUNDER
Justin Newsome
Justin Newsome is an A&R leader with twenty years across major labels, including Universal Music and Island Def Jam, and television, where he was the first Head Music Scout in American Idol history and head music scout for America's Got Talent. Since 2012 he has run Newsome Projects, the A&R and artist-development practice people hire him through.
He is the first person to coin Reverse A&R: build the artistic world first, then find the human who belongs inside it. With the publication of the Fathomless Worlds manifesto, he put on record a process no one had built before: a world created around a placeholder artist, used to find the one human it was made for, then handed to that human as their own.
He is the first to do it this way. He founded BLADEPHAROH and Fathomless Worlds to redefine the category he spent his whole career in, and now builds the technology as well as the company.
Billy Beane did not invent looking at the numbers, or the word Moneyball. He made it a discipline, became the name attached to it, turned it into Excalibur, and Major League Baseball was never the same. Newsome did not invent the phrase Reverse A&R. It had floated around this business for years, unofficially, usually meaning something else. He gave the phrase a definition, turned it into a discipline, and built a company on it. That is further than Beane got. Beane never named his. A writer did that for him, after the fact. Newsome named his.
THE WORK
His work has included A&R and artist development for major-label and entertainment partners, as well as consulting directly with individual artists, independent clients and smaller businesses across a much wider range of music-industry problems.
That work can mean analyzing a song. Developing an artist. Coaching stage work and movement for live performance. Working through branding, image or social strategy. Building a marketing plan. Mapping out a year of career development. Helping somebody understand the business they are trying to enter. Advising on music-industry strategy or policy.
Newsome holds an M.A. in Music Business from Berklee College of Music. He has taught classes around the country and judged talent competitions, adding formal study and education to years spent doing the work directly with artists and companies.
THE RANGE
His career has also moved outside the traditional A&R lane -- through media strategy, sales, corporate environments, business, film and television, startups and independent consulting.
Those experiences did not stay in separate boxes. They affect how he thinks about artists, audiences, positioning, business models and the systems now being built under BLADEPHAROH.
SELECTED WORK
His entertainment work includes being the first Head Music Scout in American Idol history, where he was also casting director and scouted the season 14 winner; head music scout for America's Got Talent; and casting for ABC's 2017 competition series Boy Band, where he cast members who ultimately became part of the group assembled through the series and subsequently signed by Johnny Wright.
Other projects have involved Selena Gomez, The Chainsmokers, Max Martin, MKTO and Big Time Rush, as well as Sabrina Carpenter early in her career. His work with Sabrina also included forming the band that opened select tour dates for her.
